This is a family portrait. My husband, Mom, Dad, two
sisters, their husbands, two nieces and one nephew are represented in some way
by all the different items in this painting. My father was a photographer and is
no longer with us. His camera tripod is the backbone of the painting. The title
was inspired by a Chinese fortune cookie I opened one evening. It said "You will
be surrounded by luxury!" We had a good laugh over it, and then I started
thinking of all the many ways we are, indeed, surrounded by luxury. Good
families, good friends around our dinner table…it rather depends upon how you
define "luxury"! I apologize to Henri Matisse for turning his painting Red
Room into a paint-by-numbers. It is included because I overheard my
brother-in-law explaining to someone at a gallery reception that "Myra is
such a good artist—you can’t see the numbers in her work anymore!" The
two-tiered cake shows up again in
The Studio (Closet).
